May 23, 2005 - Huaraz, Peru... Up in the Mountains
At six in the morning of Saturday, as the bus pulled into the bus teminal of Huaraz, I found myself blinking in the crisp moutain air, at an altitude of 3091m. ... What a change from the flat, desert like coast of Peru! The hot Ecuadorian Pacific coast, needless to say, feels like it belonged to a totally different era! We had planned to take the bus to Chimbote and stay overnight so we could catch the 8. ... The buses from Trijullo were all night buses but the bus from Chimbote took a scenic day route through a canyon. ... We had heard Chimbote was a bit of a dive but we had never imagined it would be so bad! As soon as the bus hit the outskirts of town we were struck by an overpowering fish smell. ... The fish smell in Chimbote is really disgusting and very overpowering. ... I decided to take Immodium (although I know I shouldn't) because there was no way I was going to pospone the trip and stay in Chimbote any longer than I had to. ...

The trip to casma involved a tremendous mountain pass with spectacular views of the COrdillera Blanca and then amazingly scary roads down to the coast through the desert. Casma itself is nothing but a dusty town in the desert a few miles from the coast, but there is the ruins of Sechin nearby, which are quite interesting with their very colourful faces and their warriorsss carved into the stone, with thier victims heads surrounding him. ... An excellent sightseeing trip in the bus- from the desert sands by the pacific, through tto the spectacular vistas of the cordilla blanca where the high plateau is towered over by over 50 peaks of glaciars all above 6000m With perfectly clear weather, I could see about half of them in spectacular fashion- This was one of those WOW moments.An excellent sightseeing trip in the bus- from the desert sands by the pacific, through tto the spectacular vistas of the cordilla blanca where the high plateau is towered over by over 50 peaks of glaciars all above 6000m With perfectly clear weather, I could see about half of them in spectacular fashion- This was one of those WOW moments....
