We left Cuzco in a terrible state after the weekend´s activities for our trek. Next day was hiking for a few hours along train tracks to a town called Aguas Calientes which is the closest town to Machu Picchu. ... Along the way we passed many unhappy travellers going the opposite direction - there had been a strike in Cuzco and no airplanes to Cuzco or trains to MP - having to hike 3-6 hours back to another bus to get home.We left Cuzco in a terrible state after the weekend´s activities for our trek. Hi everyone So I m back just completed the Inka Trail, a 4 day trek across the mountains of Peru to reach the Inka settlement of Machu Picchu. ... So today was the last day and after a 4am start waking in the freezing cold tent and then trekking for another 2hrs on crippling knees and calfs I finally made it to Machu Picchu. ... In it we met an old couple from Calgary who had since retired to the Okanagan, we later ran in to them again at Machu Picchu and at the train station back. ... We caught the 5:30am bus to Machu Picchu in order to get passes for Cindy and Leslie to climb Huayna Pichu (the big green mountain in the background of Machu Picchu). ... When we returned to Machu Picchu, we didn´t want to leave, so we went and sat in a quiet place with a fantastic view for about an hour. ... Our brief for today, first we were to walk to Inti Punku ("Sun Gate"), where we would sit and watch the mist dissipate and the sun rise to reveal the panoramic view of Machupicchu. While it was still dark at 4am, we began the final leg of the trek to the lost city of Machupicchu! We indeed climbed to 'Inkipunku' or The Sun Gate to witness the mist fade away and sunrise over the sacred citadel of Machu Picchu. ...
