We then continued on via Richard's Bay, which turned out to be a huge industrial site, to Eshowe where we checked into Zulu Backpackers and DIY Dave fixed our tent with great success! Situated around a beautiful indigenous forest and surrounded by green rolling hills, Eshowe is in the heart of Zululand. ... It has been home to 4 Zulu Kings and the British occupied the site during the Anglo-Zulu war and built Fort Nongyayi in 1883 establishing Eshowe as the admin centre of the newly captured territory. ... On the way back to Eshowe we set out to find the Mandawe Church and Cross (erected in the 1930's) which mark a battle between the British and Zulu's, KwaBulawayo (fortified village of Shaka's Kraal) and Cowards Bush (where warriors who returned from battle without their spears or had wounds in their back were executed) but unfortunately the dirt road that we were on was getting progressively worse so we had to turn back. ... Back in Eshowe we headed to the Norwegian Cemetery, the British cemetery and Martyr's Cross, but again the roads were terrible and there were no signs. ... In the mid 19th century Norwegian missionaries set up camp in Eshowe. ...
