Really sad to be leaving today, after some last min packing, it was time to make the journey home.(Z5 OKJ) Some 75 mins later and were were on our way down the runway, then increased delay was due to fact they had not got paperwork, and had had to be handwritten! a great journey back, and an excellent air steward in our section who kept everyone happy and we were then coming to a stand at Johannesburg Airport. ... Jan 4, 2009 - Leaving home and First weekend in Chicago

Wake up alarm sounds at 03h20 in Kenton, South Africa. It’s an easy, although wet, drive to Port Elizabeth to catch our early flight to Johannesburg where, once there we will need to finalise our packing, passports, and tickets for our early evening flight to Chicago via Dakar and Washington. ... There are some teary goodbyes on the phone to family and we both change our voicemail messages to say that we will be out of the country until the end of the year! Just over 40 hours later we approach Chicago O’Hare airport.Wake up alarm sounds at 03h20 in Kenton, South Africa. ‘Lock all vehicle doors and close windows…at night slow down as you approach traffic light so as to reach them as they turn green…never open your window for a stranger…if you encounter obstacles in the road such as rocks or tyres, do not get out of your vehicle, drive off in the opposite direction…’. They are doing it again in The Star, advising you not to go to Johannesburg, then again I did not plan to, for those reasons and because I’m more interested in seeing how December 16th ‘Reconciliation Day‘ is celebrated in Pretoria, the seat of government. ... It is late at night when we head back to our lodge in Johannesburg and we conscientiously apply all the advice of the Star until the barbed wire gates of the African Moon Lodge are safely closed behind us. ...
