23 – 27 February After an early breakfast, I checked out from the hotel and took a tuk tuk (taxi) to the bus station and entered a bus to Nong Khai. ... Nong Khai. ... I love Nong Khai, this little town on the Mekong River bank, with Thai measure it is a small town, after all there are around 70 000 inhabitants according to my book. ... Nong Khai is a very easy going and laid-back town. ... Another reason why I am so fond of Nong Khai is the effective and very well kept Pantawee Hotel. ...

Been a bit slow in updating the blog. We were only over the border 5 minutes when we saw the very reassuring sight of a 7/11 - you know your in Thailand when the 7/11 sign is on almost every corner! We found a really good restaurant / guest house in Nong Khia called Mutt Mee which apart from serving the most amazing apple pie and ice cream was the fountain of all knowledge in respect of Nong Khai. ... High on the list of things to do in Nong Khai, and its not a very long list, is to visit the sculpture park. ... The park was created by a Laos sculptor who fled from Laos during the political troubles in the 70's - he was a bit of a weirdo who believed he was half man / half animal who got his wisdom from a hermit he met in a cave.Been a bit slow in updating the blog. The hotel was a little run down, but considering it housed US soldiers from the Vietnam war that were stationed at the airbase outside of town, it was alright (plus it was the cheapest place in Thailand that we've stayed at yet AND it came with a bathroom and TV - Bonus!) In the morning we caught a bus to Nong Khai but didn't stay long as we found another bike shop to rent our second scooter named "the red rocket" however it wasn't as nice as the hog with only 100cc, but it did the job so we set off driving along the Mekong River (which runs in between Laos and Thailand) until we got to a place called Sangkhom, where we stayed in a hut on the river. ... The next day we headed toward Loei along the Mekong to do a loop to Pak Chom and back on to Nong Khai. ... Luckily we chose all the right forks in the road and ended up back on the highway that we intended to take originally anyways! Once we arrived back in Nong Khai we got settled into our guest house and then toured around the city seeing Pra That Nong Khai (a chedi that has slide into the middle of the Mekong and can only be seen in the dry season when the river drops about 20 meters) and a sculpture park with massive concrete structures of ancient Buddah and Hindu gods. ...
