The previous day had seen a 6 hour bus ride from Phayao to Sukhothai, the old Thai capital in the 1th and 14th centuries. ... Although there were some other visitors around, it was not crowded and it was not impossible to imagine what it would have been like 8 centuries previously, with monks in the temples and the local populace making offerings to the numerous Buddha statues, some of which are still in place, although many were destroyed when Sukhothai was sacked by the Burmese and the capital was moved south to Ayutthya. ...

15 so I read up on Sukhothai (meaning dawn of happiness) in Lonely planet while I waited. ... The train arrived in to Phitsanulok just after 2pm where it was a relief to see the guy from my guest house I'd booked in Sukhothai standing on the platform holding a sign with my name on, it was about an hours drive to my guest house in Sukothai. ... I was staying at a small guest house called the Vitoon Guest House, where you take your shoes off at the door which makes it feel like you're staying in someone's house, which I guess you are! My room was perfectly adequate and I still had my own bathroom but it was certainly a reality check after the previouse nights luxury! I was staying in the old town part of Sukhothai, in the only guest house there, the new town was 12Km away, not that I was missing much, the advantage of staying there was that it was opposite the entrance to the historical park (Sukhothai was the capital of Thailand in the 13th and early 14th century before the capital was moved Ayutthaya, unlike Ayutthuya the ruins have not been engulfed by the modern town). ... The following morning I started out by going to The Ramkhamhaeng National Museum which had information about the history of Sukhothai and some artefacts recovered from the ruins, including statues of Buddha and Sawankhalok pottery (which is famous apparantly) Then, as the best way to see the ruins in the historical park is on a bike I went back to my guest house and hired the "turbo fairy" complete with basket on the front (see photo)for 20 baht for the day. ...
