Another gorgeous weekend was in store so we jumped on the bus to Canterbury. ... We also learned that the gates of Canterbury closed at 9pm and those that were fortunate enough to have a horse and wanted to get in for the night were said to “canter”: [Origin: 1745–55; short for Canterbury to ride at a pace like that of Canterbury pilgrims] We then took a touristy 45 minute paddle boat up and down a short section of the River Stour that took us under the Hospital to the back of their gardens which is the one picture of the river. ... As a humorous side note: on our bus travels, we noticed many pubs that advertised to be the “best brewers in Britain!” On to the Cathedral…Quoting from a sign: Did You Know? • Canterbury Cathedral is the Mother Church of the worldwide Anglican Communion and the Seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. ... • It costs $23,500 each day to run Canterbury Cathedral. ...

Today, the Nash's and Millington's took a drive over to Canterbury to see what was there. ... Took another British side trip to see my mate from my South African Expedition. We toured Canterbury, a gorgeous little brit town that exudes character and wealth. ... rebecca and i decided to go on a pilgrimage to the canterbury cathedral. ... we connected with a train at victoria (trains were delayed by 30 minutes to an hour) and arrived in canterbury in the middle of the afternoon. ... unlike the trip into the forest, we actually talked to the attendants at canterbury station and made plans for our return trip in advance. ... we left the station and crossed a bridge and were transported into the past as we found ourselves in the shadow of the ruins of canterbury castle, a norman stronghold more than 1,000 years old and constructed of remnants of an ancient roman fort that preceeds it. ... canterbury castle has the largest floorplan of any norman castle in england. ...

This morning we took a bus into Kent to visit Charles Darwin's house, known as "Down House," where he lived after his marriage to Emma Wedgewood (interesting side-note: before marrying her he drew up a list of the advantages and disadvantages of having a wife), from 1842 until his death in 1882. After Darwin, we went to Canterbury and saw the Canterbury Cathedral, one of the oldest sights in England. ...
