Hello from York! I am sorry for the delay in posting an update. ... On Friday, my Lime & Stone class traveled to the city of Malton, England about a half hour north of York. ... About 30 of us gathered at York House (built around 1590)--the location of the field work, to have hands-on experience in working with lime. ... It was very nice to attend a service, as I have not visited one since I arrived in York. ... Hello from York, England! Thank you for all the kind and inspirational words I have received in preparing for this trip. ... Here are a few things I learned: “Ta” --Thank you “Jumper” -- A pullover or sweater “Cheers” -- A farewell “Hob” -- Stove top burners “Corn flour” -- cornstarch and remembering to turn on the bathroom light--positioned outside the restroom--before entering This weekend I moved into my new home on the University of York campus. ... Today I embarked on my first shopping trip into York’s city centre. ... Fortunately, I was able to make my way back to York Minster--the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe and somewhat of a landmark in the city, and found a map with the familiar “You are here” stamp to locate the next store on my list. ...

Here in York it seems that, if you don’t like the weather, wait a half hour! The garden outside our room was so pretty in the intermittent sun, though, and the birds were singing away. ... Today we decided to see York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, and whose twin bell towers dominate the York skyline. ... It was only about a 20 minute walk through York, pretty much the same route as we went through the previous night for our ghost walk. ... The street, being cobbled, has channels running down either side – perhaps to ferry away the awful sludge of blood and who knows what else? We came out the other side of the narrow streets of the Shambles to the enormous pale stone façade of York Minster, and marveled that they took 250 years to build it. ... We walked again through the Shambles, and went down a side alley to a courtyard to a pub (I think it was called Ye Olde Starre Inn and Pub), which claimed to be the oldest in York, from the 1600s. ...

We pulled into York not long before 2:00 pm, and walked over a bridge and again over uneven sidewalks and streets about 15 minutes and found our hotel for the next two nights, The Mount Royale Hotel, which came highly recommended on a website where I did a lot of my research. ... It is so pretty, and I could easily just spend our entire time here in York enjoying this wonderful hotel, but the sights and sounds of York await. ... We did some research online (the hotel offers free wireless internet), and while some of the ghost tours relied on actors and gimmicks, we decided to take one that was more just about the storytelling, simply called “The Haunted Walk of York”. ... We walked through York to reach the meeting place, crossing through the stone tower of Michelsgate and over the bridge, where geese were swimming and feeding in the river. ... I don’t remember our guide’s name, but he said that he had been doing these walks for a long time, and that he had previously been a bartender, so right away he’s probably heard every ghost story about York that ever was! The walk was very good, and some of the stories were of people he had known, which lent an air of credibility. ...

We set off on our road trip around the UK. Both towns have an industrial feel, mostly 50’s style, brown, brick buildings and the odd architectural gem thrown in for good measure! Although the cities are not typically beautiful when compared to the many stunning medieval towns of neighbouring areas, they do offer great night life with loads of pubs and restaurant’s to entertain! We head into York and set up camp. ... We drive through the North Yorkshire Moors. ... The countryside is spectacular, but what we are most impressed by is the gorgous little towns we discover along the way.We set off on our road trip around the UK.
