Aug 20, 2009 - Top of the World!

After spending the night in Tok, we headed for the Taylor Highway, on our way to Chicken. ... The road up to Chicken was fairly smooth, just some frost heaves, and we stopped in beautiful downtown Chicken for some shopping and lunch. ... It's a unique little town, left over from the goldmining days; now only has about 15 year-round residents, plus those who come for the "5 months of spring, summer and fall" to greet the tourists! Then the adventure of the day really started!! The Top of the World Highway from Chicken to Dawson City, Yukon, is mostly dirt, gravel, potholes, "washboards", and frost heaves!! The views of the mountains for miles and miles make up for the rough ride (Mickey says the jury is still out on that one!) You really do feel like you are on top of the world - the mountains seem to go on forever! About half way across, we went through customs and into Canada, leaving Alaska behind. ...

Jul 24, 2009 - Leg 16, Dawson City, YT, to Chicken, AK, Thursday

We finally reached Chicken, AK, at 12:30 PM, Alaska time (one hour earlier than Pacific time), traveling 110 miles in 7+ hours, where we set up for the night at Chicken Creek RV Park. ... Will our road signs be next? Beautiful Downtown Chicken, AK It was a great feeling to be back in the US, despite the friendliness of Canadians. ... We met with the other caravaners at 2 PM and toured the old town of Chicken, established in the late 1800s, when a major gold discovery was made on Chicken Creek. ... Rain, Again After the tour of Chicken, we napped for an hour or so, and woke up to a few rain drops on top of the motorhome. ... The meal was excellent! After dinner, we walked to the other RV park in Chicken, Goldpanner Gift Shop and RV Park, watching folks pan for gold, walking past the Pedro Dredge, and perusing the gift shop. ...

It also decided it was going to rain! However we made it to Chicken all in one piece but with and coach and car covered with mud! A couple we had met in Dawson City, Jane and Jim arrived a few hours after us and we all agreed that it had been an interesting drive one not to be repeated again in the near future. ... But the views were worth it! Our campground in Chicken was next to Pedro Dredge No 4 which operated in Chicken Creek between 1959 and 1967. ... Finally how did Chicken get its name? Chicken was supposedly named by early miners who wanted to name their camp ptarmigan, but were unable to spell it and settled instead for chicken. ...

Upon leaving Valdez we made a B-line North on the Richardson Hwy, back to the Alaskan Hwy at Delta Junction, then headed West toward Tok, AK. The pavement ended just before we arrived at the famous Chicken but let’s say that the hospitality and socializing with fellow travelers began here again. ...
