We left home at 11am and spent the first night at Wal-Mart in Coos Bay, OR. We arrived in the Redwoods early afternoon and set up camp in a little remote park snuggled between the Klamath River and the ocean. ... We’ve enjoyed a cool week in the Redwood National Forest of northwestern California. Our campground was in a bowl surrounded on three sides by redwood forest and on the fourth by the Klamath River. ... The floor was a mosaic of the Klamath river and the walls were covered with well done murals made from wood pieces. ... To our surprise the food was delicious and abundant.We’ve enjoyed a cool week in the Redwood National Forest of northwestern California. Ever since I first heard of the giant redwood trees of California, I have wanted to visit them. Another day we visited Crescent City, which is just north of Klamath. ... The drive back to the campground in Klamath was so beautiful; much of the coastline was obscured by fog this morning, but it was so incredible. ... After eating, Tommy and I both decided that we were in the mood for an afternoon nap instead of sightseeing, so headed back toward Klamath and the campground. ... We drove on back to the campground, Klamath Camper Corral and Tommy watched a little TV and I laid across the bed and read for several hours. ...

July 18, 2009, Saturday - Day 33 - We were up early this morning and since we were still dry camping at Seven Feathers Casino in Canyonville, Oregon, it didn't take long to ready the rig to leave. We drove South on Hwy 101 for about 80 to 100 miles heading for California, parked the rig at Klamath Camper Corral in Klamath, CA, disconnected the Trail Blazer and set off to do some sightseeing. ... , so we took Hwy 101 along the coast back to the campground in Klamath; the fog was settling in over sections of the coastline again. ... We stopped by the bridge to Klamath so Julieann could have her picture taken with the golden bears and play “chicken” with any traffic coming by. ... There was a sign welcoming people to Klamath that displayed a huge fish. ... I was curious as to what “Klamath” meant; the name of the fish? The name of the town’s founder? After some research it turned out that the fish displayed is a Salmon because the ONLY industry this town has seen (since logging of the Redwoods was stopped) is Salmon fishing and has nothing to do with the name of the town. ... But the name, “Klamath”, is actually borrowed from one of three American Indian tribes that lived here. ... The town of Klamath, as of the census of 2000, had 651 people, 264 households, and 177 families residing in the town (the sign now says “Pop 827”). ...

The drive up highway 101 (the Redwood Highway) from Cloverdale to Klamath was beautiful. ... The RV park we are staying at is right on the Klamath River. ... Not to worry! I just picked up the pace and quickly departed the area! In 1999, there was a big flood that completely swept away the town of Klamath and the RV park we are at was completely flooded out. ... After a tough day hiking in the redwoods and elk watching, it was time to curl up with a good book (Robert Lundlum’s The Artic Event) and Oscar in my lap in the Adirondack chair and watch the beautiful Klamath River flow by. ...
